The piracy of Somalia

In the news is common to hear that a boat has been hijacked by some Somalian pirates. The piracy in the coast of Somalia has been a threat to international shipping since the second phase of the Somali Civil War in the early 21st century. Since 2005, many international organizations, have worried about the rise in acts of piracy.

The government of Somalia has a law that is based on protecting the pirates, any foreign army can entry in the Somalian territorial sea and if the pirates are running away and they are in the area the foreign army can entry to there. And the governors accept this law because the pirates bribe them giving a part of their benefits.

The somalian fishermen began forming armed groups to stop the foreign ships. They eventually turned to hijacking commercial vessels for ransom as an alternate source of income. The pirates also believed that they were protecting their fishing grounds and exacting justice and compensation for the marine resources stolen. Some of the pirate networks, such as the National Volunteer Coast Guard, which are testimony to the pirates initial motivations. However, as piracy became substantially more lucrative, other reports have speculated that financial gain became the primary motive for the pirates. Some reports have also accused certain government officials in Somalia of complicity with the pirates. The pirates get most of their weapons from Yemen, but a significant amount comes from Mogadishu, Somalia's capital. Weapons dealers help with the weapons the pirates because they get a part of the rescue.
